Dying as the year dies

My father-in-law is dying, today may be his last day with us. It is amazing how long one can hold on even after refusing treatment, liquids and food. He's on so much morphine now, he is mostly asleep and doesn't know who is visiting and when. And tonight is my husband's birthday too. What a way to ring in the new year and your new age.
I also never realized how big an effect it has on the whole family. As for myself I am so restless, always wondering what is going on at the hospital (Sunnyview Rehab in Schenectady, NY) since I'm staying home with the kids while their Dad supports his Mom and siblings. As my niece put it, our life is on hold now until it finally happens. And then he will leave his suffering behind.

Postscript: Arnold Dedicke died today. His obituary is at http://www.autenrithfuneral.com/sitemaker/sites/weaute0/obit.cgi?user=arnold-dedicke#
